Lake Vansjø with its many islands and skerries is the largest lake in Østfold County. Its shores are framed by forests, farming country and housing. It presents all types of terrain, ranging from mountain slopes and reed beds to rolling forested areas. Lake Vansjø touches on Moss, Våler, Rygge and Råde municipalities in Østfold County.
Lake Vansjø is divided in two sections, one the shallow Vanemfjorden Bay to the west and to the east the deeper Storfjorden Bay. The two sections are separated by a narrow sound. Lake Vansjø is relatively eutrophic, evidenced by the periodic summertime blue-green algal blooms. A popular recreation site, the lake is offers opportunities for boat life, canoeing, swimming and sports fishing.
Lake Vansjø houses as many as 17 registered species. The list includes perch, ruffe, pikeperch, pike, burbot, roach, rudd, bleak, bream, silver bream, tench, eel, three-spine stickleback, brown trout, smelt, bullhead and lamprey. Sports fishing is mainly focused on perch, pike and pikeperch, as well as coarse fishing for carp fishes.

Pikeperch exceeding 8 kg have been caught here, as well as perch over 2 kg. Every year pike are caught weighing around 10 kg.

Living baitfish is not allowed. Eel is completely protected and may not be fished. General speed limit for boats is 5 knots. Minimum size for trout is 25 cm and for pikeperch is 42 cm.
There is no fee for youth under 16 years fishing with an adult. Net fishing is not allowed unless the FVO gives specific permission.
