Lake Ara is one of several lakes in Haldenvassdraget. This lake system is located in the Akershus and Østfold counties running parallel to the Swedish border and emptying near Halden. In the summer it’s possible to take your boat through locks between lakes Øymarkssjøen and Ara or directly to Lake Aspern. Thus you can reach large water areas from the rental cabins or slipways in Lake Ara.
Lake Ara is in the Aremark Municipality. The name probably means Ørnesjøen and has also lent its name to the whole area. Located in the middle of Haldenvassdraget the lake has many large and small island and bays. Its shallow coves and headlands offer quiet opportunities for exciting fishing experiences.
The lake is regulated to a winter level of 1.63 m and in the summer to 1 m. The Secchi disk reading is average over mud and stone bottoms along the shoreline. The western side of the lake is for the most part shallower with more vegetation, while the eastern side is rockier with cliffs and deeper water. The houses and farm fields near the water are most visible on the eastern shore. The vegetation round the lake comprises both deciduous and coniferous trees, as well as private land all the way to the water.
